My top 12 blogging tips

I have been running this blog for just over a year now and I have learnt so much from doing it.  Before I started my blog I had no clue where to even start. I started my blog from scratch and it took me months to get my head round it. I read so many different blogging tips posts to help get me started and they really did help me so I thought that I would write my own to help out other bloggers, whether you are just starting out or have been blogging a while.

So here are my top 12 blogging tips:

Think carefully about your blog name

One of the main things to think about is your blog name. Yes you can change it in the future but its so much hassle and once people start to remember your name you're not going to want to change it, are you? That will just confuse people. You need a name that people are going to remember so you're not going to want a name that is such a mouthful that people are going to forget after 5 seconds. You need to keep thinking are you going to like it in the future. If your name it something like 'Teenageblogger' it might work for a couple of years but when you turn 20 years old, 'teenage' no longer refers to you, so you need something that you can carry with you into the future. Once you pick your name you need to make sure that no one else has that blog name because if they do then that could cause copyright issues.

Join social media

Social media is a great place to advertise your blog and to meet other people. Set up social media accounts for your blog or link your blog to already existing social media accounts as this can help to promote your blog posts. In the future if you are being paid to write blog posts some brands/companies want you to have a certain amount of followers on a certain platform so it is better to start them when you start your blog.

Don't send out auto private messages on social media

This can be really annoying for other people and most of the people I know hate it. I know a lot of people who will unfollow anyone who does it and in reality when you get a auto private message it makes you not want to read the blog and more often than not it gets ignored.

Be personal in your blog posts

If I read a blog post that doesn't really reflect the person then i'm not really going to want to go back and read more. It's your blog, let people know that. Let your posts reflect your life and really connect with your audience. An about me page is a good idea because it lets people know a little bit more about you. I always sign off my posts with my name because it just's adds a personal touch to it.

Follow other bloggers on social media

Don't just follow but interact with them. Talk, RT/share and join in with twitter chats to get to know other bloggers. The more that you interact with other bloggers the more likely it is that they will notice you. If you just follow them then there is a low chance that they are going to see you if they have many people follow them because you'll get lost in their notifications so if you tweet them and reply to their tweets then you are more likely to get noticed. One thing i'll say is don't go around tagging random people in your tweets in hope that they will read your blog because all that will happen from this is that you'll get ignored and maybe even blocked. People don't like being forced into reading something, if they think it looks good then they will read it in their own time.

Don't go into it with your expectations really high

If you start writing on your blog and expect after two weeks to be getting paid to write then i'm sorry but you are going to be disappointed. Most bloggers can go months and even years without getting paid to write. If you go into blogging with the mind set to get paid then this is going to show in your writing and people won't be attracted to your blog. You need to enjoy writing and be passionate about starting your blog. People need a reason to keep coming back to your blog so regular posts is key.

Don't give up

You may find that it takes a while for people to start visiting your blog but if you stick at it, keep writing and promoting your blog through your social media then after time you will have people visiting your blog.

Have fun

It's your blog have fun with it. Don't stress yourself out so much trying to be the same as everyone else, be yourself. If you don't want to blog something that another blog has then don't. Blog what you want to blog. The moment that you're not enjoying it any more is the moment you need to take a step back and consider why you're doing it. If it's for everyone else then you need to stop and take a break until you want to do it because you enjoy it again.

As much as you say you'll be able to keep on top of things, I can assure you that I found it difficult. Especially because I had college, placement, work and a social life to keep on top of as well. Get a note book and plan a few ideas out that you want to blog about. I've got mine planned for the next 3/4 months so that i'm not rushing at last minute trying to think of a blog post to write. Even if you think a week ahead then this is going to help you loads.

Don't over or under load your posts

Try to write a good amount in your posts. I would suggest writing more than 300 words but no more than 1200 words or people get bored of reading. I usually write around 600 words per post.

Don't copy

If you see a really good idea on a blog that someone has come up with by themselves then don't just copy it because you like it. If you want to use that idea then message the blog author and ask for their permission.

Interact with your audience

Add questions in your post to interact with your audience. Set up twitter chats to help get to know other people and see who is reading your blog.

I really hope that these tips help you with your blog.
